Simulating Counterinsurgency and Coalition Strategies

چکیده
We model insurgency (IN) and counterinsurgency (COIN) operations with a large-scale system of differential equations that is connected to a coalition network model. Our simulations analyze components of leadership, promotion, recruitment, financial resources, operational techniques, network communications, coalition cooperation, logistics, security, intelligence, infrastructure development, humanitarian aid, and psychological warfare, with the goal of informing today’s decision makers of the options available in counterinsurgency tactics, operations, and strategy. In order to be more effective, the US military must improve its counterinsurgency capabilities and flexibility to match the adaptability of insurgent networks and terror cells. Our simulation model combines elements of traditional differential equation force-on-force modeling with modern social science modeling of networks, psyop, and coalition cooperation to inform the tactics and strategies of counterinsurgency decision makers. We calibrated our model with baseline data intended to keep the balanced strength equilibrium. We show the model development and results of a four-stage counter-insurgency scenario. A memetic framework for describing and simulating spatial prisoner's dilemma with coalition formation
This paper presents a framework for describing the spatial distribution and the global frequency of agents who play the spatial prisoner’s dilemma with coalition formation. The agent interaction is described by a non-iterated game, where each agent only locally interacts with its neighbours. Every agent may behave as a defector or a cooperator when playing isolated, but they can join or lead co...

How can the West continue to shape international order without over-committing itself to ruinous and ambiguous operations on the scale of Iraq and Afghanistan? This article addresses this question by examining the failures of counterinsurgency in Afghanistan, and by outlining three alternatives for future engagements: the Libya model, the indirect approach, and contingency operations in support...

Erin Hankin is a Medical Student; Steven Jeffery is Consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon, Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham The war being fought in Iraq (2003–2009) and Afghanistan (2006–present) is unconventional in that British forces are predominantly engaged in counterinsurgency tactics as part of an asymmetric war (Belmont et al, 2010). While US ...
متن کاملCan Countries Buy Their Way Out of Insurgencies? Evidence from Iraq.∗
The academic community has yet to settle on the manner and mechanisms by which economics-based counterinsurgency initiatives affect violence levels. This piece considers the effect of local-business revitalization initiatives on insurgent violence by analyzing Iraqi First, an initiative implemented by the U.S. military in Iraq through which billions of dollars were committed to local commodity ...
متن کاملEstimating Population Attitudes with CogSim
Introduction: Estimating the nonkinetic effects of irregular warfare (IW) actions on the population, such as those described in the U.S. Army counterinsurgency manual,1 is now incorporated into the analysis of IW war games. CogSim is an agent-based population attitude model developed at NRL as a prototype to predict coalition formation between several groups based on social science theories, na...
